Nelson Rolihlala Mandela was born in Transkey, South Africa on July 18,1918. His father, Henry Mandela was the chief of the tembu tribe. He was educated at University College of Fort Hare from where he was expelled because he had taken part in a demonstration of students, and in the Witwatersand university andspecified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the apartheid policies of the national party after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956 and was acquitted in 1961. When the ANC was banned in 1960 Mandela created Umkhonta we Sizwe a "military wing". Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to five years with hard labour. In 1963 he was arrested with many leaders of the ANC for sabotage,treason and plot. For these facts, he was condemned in 1964 wuth seven other militants to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982 he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison after at Poolsmoor Prison.
During his years in prison Nelson Mandela's reputation grew. He was accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance against apartheid. He refused to compromise his political position to obtain fis freedom.
He was released in 1990, 26 years after his arrestation, a record of detention for a political reason. He was elected president of the ANC in 1991. Nelson Mandela and Frederik Klerk negotiated and succeeded in putting an end to apartheid. The two men received the Nobel Price of Peace in 1993. One year later, at the first free election in South African History, Nelson Mandela was the first black president. He was president from1994 to 1999.
