Idea of Progress/aide
Bonjour,
je passe mon oral d'anglais vendredi de la semaine prochaine et j'aimerais si possible que quelqu'un me signale mes erreurs sur la notion d'idée de progrès. Je vous en serais très reconnaissant !
I'm going to talk about the notion of progress.
The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change, a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place.
Today, we can’t imagine ourselves without technological advances such as cars, microwaves, cell phones, computers, and televisions. Particularly in the field of the computing, internet revolutionized our means of communication.
However, what effect do these « advances » have on our society ? Ko they have a positive effect on the way we live?
the idea of progress is still debate between those who consider that it’s beneficial and those for whom it’s harmful.
So, I suggest to think about the following question: let us have to be afraid of the progress ?
And do internet bring people closer together or do it alienate us ?
The technology allowed many things, in particular in the communication.
To explain , I am going to present an article nammed "Facebook Reaches One Billion Active Users" of the site" English Online " relating to Facebook.
Facebook is a social network used all around the world. Facebook has announced that it has reached now more than one billion users, which represents one person on seven on our planet.
In many african countries, Facebook can be displayed on basic mobiles without internet access, thanks to a simplified version. Many people, especially in rural areas, ask for such phones “with Facebook on them”.
One of the reason of such a success is that Facebook lets you connect to different people from anywhere in the world. This gives you the opportunity to learn more about the culture of other countries.
Speak with people becomes extremely simpler thanks to blogs, forums, social networks and softwares like Skype...
Moreover, Facebook is free. And not only that, but it's also one of the best mediums for communication. You can send messages, start a video call, and upload photos and videos without charge. Everybody can communicate for a moderate cost, even in developing countries.
In countries without freedom or in zones of conflict, it's a way for the people to keep in touch with the rest of the world. It helps to keep freedom of expression.
Nevertheless, an article named « The Dangers Of The Internet" studied in class, explains the different dangers of internet.
First of all, Internet is addicting for some people,
Internet is a useful and helpful tool, but it becomes harmful if you begin wasting your valuable time.
With the social networks, you can speak with many people. But some people use fake profiles.
It can be to insult or harass someone they don't like. Many people, mostly teenagers, became depressed or suicidal after being harassed on Facebook.
Or people can get your personal information. It is highly recommended not to share your personal information publicly. A lot of people tells their life one the internet without caution
Moreover, you have lots of friends you don't really know in the real life. It isolates you from the reality. It reduce or eliminate the face-to-face relationship.
Finally, on Wikipedia, which seems a serious site, you can find sometimes some false informations. For example, another site says that Michael Jackson is still alive !
With the social networks, false information can also circulate very fast.
Not to mention the big trading companies use internet to influence their customers.
I think that progress is neither good nor bad.
It allows a faster and easy communication between the people, but it presents risks.
It is necessary to know the dangers this way of communication to keep the control.
merci pour votre aide. En espérant ne pas avoir fait un texte trop long.
